Dose of Thunder, 1.1.09

I decided that it’d be a good idea to start posting my radio show playlists here. Here’s last night’s show.

17. Husker Du, “Love Is All Around” from Makes No Sense At All 7″
18. Vivian Girls, “Girl Don’t Tell Me” from Surf’s Up 7″
19. Dirty Projectors, “Rise Above” from Rise Above
20. Will Sheff, “Ex-Girl Collection” from Will Sheff/Charles Bissell Split 7″
21. Dent May, “You Can’t Force a Dance Party” from The Good Feeling Music of Dent May and His Magnificent Ukulele
22. The Clean, “Billy Two” from Compilation
23. The Shaky Hands, “The Sleepless” from The Shaky Hands – playing at the Rio in Santa Cruz, 1/16

25. Patti Smith, “Kimberly” from Horses
26. Young Marble Giants, “Salad Days” from Colossal Youth
27. Sonic Youth, “The Empty Page” from Murray Street
28. Phosphorescent, “Wolves” from Pride
29. The Tallest Man on Earth, “Pistol Dreams” from Shallow Grave
30. Pattern Is Movement, “Bird” from All Together
31. Fugazi, “Bad Mouth” from 13 Songs
32. Eric’s Trip, “Warm Girl” from Derivative 7″
33. Mean Jeans, “Stoned 2 The Bone” from Mean Jeans 7″
34. Dead Boys, “All This and More” from Young, Loud, and Snotty
35. Jawbreaker, “Do You Still Hate Me?” from 24 Hour Revenge Therapy
36. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, “This Love is Fucking Right” from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart EP
37. Minor Threat, “Salad Days” from Complete Discography

13-20 was a nice covers block, highlighted by my playing the Feelies single at 45 instead of 33 (even though the label said 45rpm). Two Salad Days, Pattern is Movement into Fugazi was pretty good. Mean Jeans debut on my show, and that song totally destroys.

There’s something extremely tactile about playing records on the radio. I hope everyone gets to experience it someday, the shuffling through stacks of vinyl in the most hurried way possible, hoping to get the next one on in time before the grooves run out on what’s airing, careful to note the speed and set the runout groove properly with the last track and start it on time, fade it in.

Tune in next thursday for more radio. Coming soon to this blog: “Why MGMT’s ‘Time to Pretend’ is the worst song of 2008.”
